After the usual formalities, you head for your helicopter, a Bell 505. Helicopter piloting is much more complex than that of an airplane. It involves coordinating 4 controls simultaneously. The general pitch (the collective) plus the throttle, the stick (the cyclic) and the rudder. First you check your helicopter with the instructor. The mechanics of a helicopter are indeed more complex than those of an airplane. It requires more maintenance to ensure maximum flight safety. Once the crucial points have been checked, you take your place at the helicopter’s controls. Start the engine! You fire up the turbine and your rotor revs up to 395 rpm, the speed required for takeoff. Your concentration is at an all-time high, but what a pleasure it is to PILOT a helicopter yourself.
